Echo Lake is the first in a series of lovely backcountry lakes reached via the trail that leads northeast from the developed areas around Summit Lake. The waters of Echo Lake are clear and blue, fading to green in the shallows. Thick forest drops to the waterline and hugs the walls of the shallow basin. Narrow strips of rocky shoreline offer respite in the sun, and the still waters are perfect for cooling tired feet before carrying on to the Twin Lakes or beyond. Some folks hike up in their swimsuits, with the goal of taking a brisk plunge before heading back to camp at Summit Lake or another of the park’s campgrounds. There is no camping permitted at Echo Lake. (Source: trails.com)

The Desolation Wilderness Area covers 63,960 acres of sub-alpine and alpine forest, granite peaks, and glacially-formed valleys and lakes. The area has been protected since 1899, insuring an unspoiled wilderness for everyone to enjoy.  It is a roadless area and is even devoid of logging and grazing.  Although the Desolation Wilderness is not very large, averaging 12.5 miles long and 8 miles wide, it contains 100 plus small glacial lakes (most filled with trout).

Desolation’s characteristic features, especially at the higher elevations, are the vast expanses of exposed granite rock interrupted by sparsely scattered trees and shrubs. These are the result of the movement of glaciers, which scraped volcanic rock layers away to expose the underlying granite. It is located southwest of Lake Tahoe and north of Highway 50 in El Dorado County California.

Echo Summit Real Estate & Cabin Information

Echo Summit is a mountain pass located in eastern El Dorado County, California, USA. At an elevation of 7,382 ft (2,250 m), it is the highest point on U.S. Route 50 in California, which traverses it at postmile 66.48 between Twin Bridges and Meyers, south of Lake Tahoe.

The "Sierra Nevada Southern Route" (aka the "Pioneer Route") of the Lincoln Highway, the first road across the United States of America, was routed over Echo Summit in 1913. (The "Sierra Nevada Northern Route" of the Lincoln Highway goes over Donner Pass.)

Echo Summit is notable for being the location of the high altitude Olympic Trials, held September 6–16, 1968 and Training Camp, in anticipation of the high altitude Olympics in Mexico City later in 1968. One of the first Tartan tracks was constructed in the middle of the forest for this event. After its use, the track was torn out and reinstalled at nearby South Tahoe Middle School where it survived until 2006. (Source: Wikipedia)
